About Fiedler Library

1093 Fiedler Hall

History

Fiedler Hall represents the third and final phase of the Durland Hall engineering complex at Kansas State University. Fiedler Hall houses a state of the art electronic library, the Department of Civil Engineering, a high-tech auditorium, and small team learning rooms wired for the information age. Construction of Fiedler Hall and Fiedler Engineering Library would not have been possible without the very generous financial support of Alice Fiedler. Her gift to help fund construction of this facility was done to commemorate the distinguished engineering career of her husband George Fiedler.

George Fiedler was originally from Bushton, Kansas. He earned a B.S. in electrical engineering in 1926 and a professional degree in electrical engineering in 1934 from Kansas State University. George served as a professor at several academic institutions, including the University of California, Berkeley. In recognition of his career achievements, George Fiedler was named to the inaugural class of the KSU Engineering Hall of Fame. A highlight of his career was the design of instrumentation, automatic controls, special devices, and glass cutting and handling machinery for the first automatic window glass manufacturing plant. In operation since 1959, this completely automatic plant was built for Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. in Decatur, Ill. For this and other contributions to the engineering field, George Fiedler was made a Fellow of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, (now IEEE), and four other engineering-related societies. He also belonged to numerous engineering honorary groups, including the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Planning for Fiedler Hall and Library began in 1997, with groundbreaking taking place on October 2, 1998. Some 75,000 sq. ft. of space was added, at a cost of more than $12 million. 20,000 sq. ft. of the facility is devoted to the library. Fiedler Hall and Fiedler Engineering Library were dedicated on September 9, 2000, and the library officially opened for business on October 10, 2000.
