How long does it take to receive a requested item?

Article requests usually take 2-5 calendar days and book requests 5-10 calendar days to arrive at Hale Library.

Does ILS have a rush service?

NO. However, ILS can usually expedite the delivery of a request that is urgently needed by:

  • ordering a request the same day if it is submitted before 3:00p.m.;
  • requesting that the lending library or commercial document supplier deliver the request by fax or UPS;
  • asking patrons to immediately notify ILS via phone or email after submitting an urgent request.

Can ILS guarantee that a request will be delivered by an exact date?

NO. ILS cannot:
  • Guarantee that the lending library or commercial document supplier will process the request the same day it is received.
  • Guarantee that the item requested won't be missing or checked out when the lending library attempts to retrieve the item.

How much does an ILS borrowing request cost?

K-State Libraries subsidizes the cost of most items; however, some items, including photocopies, may involve patron charges . Patrons are always notified of all costs prior to ordering requested items.

Can non-university patrons use ILS borrowing services?

YES. If they are willing to:
  • Purchase a non-university patron library card. Non-university patron cards are available from the Circulation Unit for a $10.00 annual fee. Free cards are given to KSU alumni (with valid alumni cards), Friends of the Library members, faculty/students from Kansas Regents and Big Twelve Plus Institutions, and faculty/students from and Manhattan Christian College.
  • Pay all charges incurred in obtaining requested materials as K-State Libraries does not subsidize borrowing requests for non-university patrons.
  • It is recommended that non-university patrons request interlibrary loans from their nearest public library as some of these libraries subsidize requests for their patrons.

Can I request a K-State Libraries' book that's checked out?

Yes.

Can I request a textbook?

NO. ILS does not borrow textbooks from other libraries. Textbooks should be purchased from a bookstore.

Interlibrary loan is intended to be a short-term transaction to aid patrons in obtaining material not available locally. For this reason, it is our policy not to process requests for textbooks.

The following information may be helpful for international students:

Academic libraries in the United States, including K-State Libraries, do not normally purchase textbooks. Students are responsible for purchasing their own textbooks which may be available as either new or used.

Some professors may place a copy or two of a textbook on Reserve in Hale Library, but don't expect all professors to do this.

Grants for purchasing textbooks are available. Contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance for more information. Phone 877-817-2287 or email:

Can I purchase a copy of a dissertation?

Interlibrary Services is happy to try to borrow dissertations and theses from other libraries, but sometimes we are unable to do so. When that happens, or if you simply prefer to purchase a copy, you may be able to purchase a copy from University Microfilms International. Many dissertations and some theses are available for purchase. To determine availabilty search Dissertations and Theses - Full Text. Citations with the "Full Text - PDF" link are available for download at no cost to KSU students, faculty, and staff. Those with the "Order a copy" link are available for purchase.

Your options for purchase are as follows:
  • Have Interlibrary Services order an UNBOUND paper copy. Bring a check made payable to K-State Libraries for $29.00 or provide VISA or Master Card number and expiration date. Copies usually arrive within 3-4 working days of receipt of the order.
  • Place an order yourself and have the unbound paper copy delivered directly to you for a charge of $41.00 by clicking on the "Order a copy" link in Dissertations and Theses - Full Text.
  • Place an order to University Microforms International (Bell and Howell) for a microfilm, microfiche, paperbound, or hardbound copy. Contact them directly for current prices at 800-521-3042. You may order from them and charge to your credit card.
