Introduction

The Block and Bridle collection was donated by Miles McKee, Professor of Animal Science and Industry in September of 1994.

The collection is housed in 7 boxes. It is divided into four series 1) annual reports (1936/1937 - 1982/1983), 2) record books (1927-1978), 3) photo album (1992/1993), and 4) yearbooks (1971/1972 - 1993/1994).

Processing of the collection was completed by Cindy Von Elling, Library Assistant I, in October 1994. The collection's accession number is UA 1994.23.

Scope and Content Note

The Block and Bridle collection was donated to the University Archives by Miles McKee, Professor of Animal Science and Industry. The material spans the years 1927-1994 and is arranged chronologically in 7 boxes.

The largest portion of the collection consists of annual reports, covering the years 1936-1983. The annual reports contain membership information, faculty members associated with the club, a financial report, sample meeting minutes, reports on regular activities and a section devoted to the achievements of club members. Biographical information about selected club members and the faculty members associated with the club are included in the annual report.

The regular activities of the Block and Bridle Club include a Fall Steak Fry, Feeders Day, the Little American Royal, the Annual Block and Bridle Banquet, and various contests and judging team events. Photographs of these activities are a large part of the annual report. Some annual reports also contain information relevant to national events, such as letters from club members stationed overseas during WWII.

Each year since 1932, a portrait of some eminent Kansas livestock man who has devoted his efforts toward furthering the interests and improvement of livestock has been unvieled at the Annual Block and Bridle Banquet. Each year since 1936, they have also chosen one of Kansas' leading figures in the livestock industry as an honorary member of the organization. Biographical information about the individuals added to the portrait gallery and the honorary members is included in the annual report.

The rest of the collection consists of club's record books, 1927-1978; a Little American Royal record book, 1948-1966; a photo album, 1992/1993; and the Block and Bridle Yearbook, 1971/72-1993/94.
